John Boyega Is a Conspiracy Hunter in First Trailer for Netflix’s They Cloned Tyrone

If you were on the lookout for 2023’s wildest mash up of sci-fi tropes, look no further: The full trailer for Netflix’s They Cloned Tyrone has finally arrived. Scheduled for a July 21, 2023 release, They Cloned Tyrone is the feature debut of Creed II writer Juel Taylor, and stars the trio of John Boyega, Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris as they stumble onto an insidious conspiracy to presumably clone the Black folks of their neighborhood. What’s left but to form a posse and take an evil corporation (or government entity) down? We don’t have much of an official synopsis, just the following: “A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.”

Boyega is your star here, playing a streetwise hustler teaming up Foxx’s flamboyant pimp and Parris’ savvy streetwalker, in a plot that simultaneously manages to evoke the cerebral horror of Jordan Peele’s Get Out and the ludicrous government conspiracy targeting Black people uncovered by the titular character in Black Dynamite. The influences really are flowing fast and furious here, as the visual style and costuming make obvious references to classic Blaxploitation cinema, while the structure of the plot seems to recall 1980s B sci-fi films, or possibly The Stepford Wives, mixed with the absurdist sci-fi of Sorry to Bother You.

They Cloned Tyrone has been anticipated for some time, as the script from Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier first received a good deal of attention after placing on The Black List. Bryan Tyree Henry was in early negotiations to star in the film, with that role eventually shifting to Boyega. They movie filmed in Atlanta at the end of 2020, and has subsequently been delayed by the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, but is about to finally have its official premiere at the 27th American Black Film Festival before its upcoming July release on Netflix. Check out the appealing mixture of comedy and sci-fi in the first trailer below.
