New on Starz: All the Movies and TV Coming in July
Images via Columbia Pictures
July is a month for barbecuing, temporary patriotism, and beating the heat by binge-watching television within the safe and comfortable confines of air-conditioning. To help you maintain that even tan (by ensuring you never get one at all), here’s everything new coming to Starz in July.
First, let’s talk movies. Standouts from the network’s most recent additions include Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, coming July 7. The reboot, from director Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story), is a continuation of the Robin Williams ‘90s classic; this time, players are transported into a videogame instead of the original board game. The new version features just as many computer-generated rhinos as the original, alongside goofy performances by Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart. Starz also picked up every James Bond film from the Connery to Brosnan era, for those desperate to revisit Octopussy, as well as the Lonely Island Hot Rod and Freddie Prinze, Jr.’s teen comedy She’s All That, all available July 1. Following later in the month is Jane Fonda’s 1968 space-erotica cult classic Barbarella (July 6), and Robert Redford and Paul Newman’s Best Picture-winning heist film The Sting (July 20). The 1955 black comedy The Ladykillers, Sandra Bullock’s rom-com The Proposal and the Michelle Pfeiffer-led crime comedy Married to the Mob will all be available to stream on July 13.
In TV news, July will feature the premiere and finale of two Starz original series. Season five of critically acclaimed crime drama Power will premiere on July 1. Paste’s Shannon M. Houston previously praised the series, which stars Omari Hardwick and Naturi Naughton, for proving “that feminism fits in on any type of show,” even if Power is frequently left out of the feminist conversation. The series has already been renewed for a sixth season. Concluding on July 8 is Wrong Man, the six-part documentary series by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost series). In the vein of Serial, a team of investigators reexamine the cases of three inmates who have maintained throughout lengthy imprisonments that they were unjustly incarcerated on Wrong Man. The series exposes flaws in the criminal justice system as the investigators connect new evidence and witness testimonies to the crimes in question.
Finally, we come to everything leaving Starz in July. We’re losing not one, not two, but all three Home Alone films by the end of the month. The largest exodus of films occurs on July 31: Exiting Starz services is Sofia Coppola’s Oscar-winning Lost in Translation, Johnny Depp-led ‘90s rom-com Benny & Joon, the noir crime classic The Usual Suspects, Ridley Scott’s roadtrip-gone-awry film Thelma & Louise, Kevin Smith’s Clerks and God-help-Cleveland baseball comedy Major League, among many other movies.
