Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle In Time Finds Its Star: Storm Reid

Movies News Storm Reid

13-year-old Storm Reid, who played Emily in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave, has been cast as the lead, Meg Murry, in the film adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s novel A Wrinkle In Time. Reid’s casting fulfills Disney’s goal of bringing more diversity to the film by hiring actors of color, and other yet-to-be cast roles will be filled with non-white actors, as well.

The casting process is still very much in the works, but it’s a done deal that Oprah Winfrey will be playing the part of Mrs. Which. Other A-listers in talks are Reese Witherspoon (Mrs. Whatsit) and Mindy Kaling (Mrs. Who).

The indispensable Ava DuVernay (Selma) will produce and direct the film, making her the first woman of color to helm a live-action film with a $100 million-plus budget. DuVernay will work from a script written by Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee.

A Wrinkle in Time is currently without a concrete production start date. Find our feature on DuVernay’s history-making hiring here.
