Illustration by Chris Wildgoose for Batman: NightwalkerBruce Wayne roaming Arkham Asylum isn’t anything new. But a teen Bruce Wayne chatting up criminals while mopping floors in Arkham? That’s a unique spin we’re excited to see.
Batman: Nightwalker, which hits shelves today, is DC’s first graphic novel adaptation of a book from its DC Icons series. The series launched in 2017 with Leigh Bardugo’s Wonder Woman: Warbringer, followed by Marie Lu’s Batman: Nightwalker and Sarah J. Maas’ Catwoman: Soulstealer. All three are getting the graphic novel treatment, and they look stunning.
Each DC Icons graphic novel is a standalone story, making every title completely accessible to new readers. And while they’re based on Young Adult novels for teens, DC fans of all ages will enjoy the books. You’ll see why after checking out the exclusive excerpts from Nightwalker and Warbringer below.
Before you dive in, here’s the scoop on Nightwalker:
Bruce Wayne is turning 18 and inheriting his family’s fortune. But on the way home from his birthday party, he makes an impulsive choice that leads him to Arkham Asylym, the infamous mental hospital. There, he meets Madeleine Wallace, a brilliant killer…and Bruce’s only hope. Madeline is the mystery Bruce must unravel, but is he convincing her to divulge her secrets, or is he feeding her the information she needs to bring Gotham City to its knees?
This Nightwalker excerpt, adapted from Marie Lu’s novel by Stuart Moore with art by Chris Wildgoose, shows Bruce’s first interaction with Madeleine.
Batman: Nightwalker is available now everywhere books are sold, and you can purchase it here. You’ll have to wait until January 7, 2020 to purchase Wonder Woman: Warbringer, but you can go ahead and pre-order it here.
Leigh Bardugo’s Warbringer has been adapted by Louise Simonson with art by Kit Seaton. And like Nightwalker, it also has an intriguing premise:
When Diana has the chance to prove her worth to her warrior sisters and Queen mother, she enters a competitive race with a clear strategy to win. But while racing, her plans for glory are derailed when she witnesses a shipwreck and hears cries of help from a drowning mortal girl. In a moment of heroism, Diana breaks Amazon law and risks exile by saving the girl. But by doing so, she inadvertently sets off a chain of events which threatens to doom the island and the Amazons, as well as the surrounding world.
This Warbringer excerpt highlights the race that leads to Diana’s life-changing discovery:
The third book in the DC Icons graphic novel series is Catwoman: Soulstealer, adapted from Sarah J. Maas’ novel by Louise Simonson with art by Samantha Dodge.
